What is MarkLogic Server?
MarkLogic Server is the industry’s leading XML server. It combines the capabilities of a database management system, a search engine, and an application server and enables organizations to store, search, analyze, and deliver information in one product rather than many.
MarkLogic Server provides a highly scalable, high performance platform on which developers can quickly and easily build rich information applications. It requires low administrative overhead because it does not impose structural constraints on the information it manages. Information can be loaded and efficiently queried without normalization in advance. It also enables faster and easier application development with the standards-based XQuery programming language, specified by the W3C XQuery 1.0 Recommendation.

MarkLogic Server Editions
MarkLogic Server comes in two editions, Standard and Enterprise, and several licensing options. Features are enabled by the appropriate license key. Upgrading is a simple matter of updating the license key and restarting—no re-installation is required.
Standard Edition
The Standard Edition is limited in the amount of content it can store and is restricted to a single server with no more than 2 CPUs.
Enterprise Edition
The Enterprise Edition can be configured to run in a distributed environment with multiple servers and any number of CPUs per server to efficiently scale to terabytes of information.
Upgrading from Standard Edition to Enterprise Edition does not require a re-installation but you may need to configure the newly activated enterprise features.
